Dyslexia Assessment Centre South West
Services
My telephone is often used as a helpline because it is normally the first contact that is made with the centre.

Parents and adults find it a relief to talk to somebody who understands and the information given is always treated as confidential. The initial calls are used as an opportunity to establish whether an assessment is appropriate but there is no obligation to book an appointment.

The assessment, which is carried out in the individual’s own home, lasts between two and three hours and involves taking a developmental history, where the child, student or adult has the opportunity to explain how things are for them.

Following this relaxed session we move on to completing the assessments which will measure such things as reading, spelling, underlying ability, memories and speed of processing.

Parents of children are very welcome to stay throughout the assessment, or equally they may prefer to get on with the ironing. Students will not want their parents to stay and adults don’t need them to..

A detailed, comprehensive report follows within days and will include a diagnosis, standardised scores for completion of examination concessions if appropriate, recommendations for teachers, lecturers, the workplace and if necessary information for the application for the Disabled Student Allowance.
